Our Haven

When we arrived to Ilulissat, Greenland over 10 years ago, Carole Ann was 8 months pregnant, we did not know anyone, nor did we have any housing.  One man let us rent a house, but it was only for 3 months.  During that time we searched diligently for housing, but could not find anything we could afford.  The local government here was developing several new parts of town and it was free to reserve a plot of land to build your own house.  One fellow put us in contact with a Canadian company that offered 1,000 square foot house kits.  We knew one of these houses would be perfect for our family.
Our Home
It takes 52 steps to get to the top J
We began praying about asking folks to come from the US to help us build one of these house kits.  By this time our three months were up and we had moved into a one-room apartment without any plumbing.  The one room was a bedroom by night and our living area by day.  Each morning we folded up the sleeping bags and the sofa bed.  The kitchen was a hot plate and a sink.  The toilet was what the Greenlanders call an “earth closet, a nice way of saying “a bucket inside a closet.”  It was difficult to live in those conditions, especially with 4 children aged newborn to 6 years, but we learned to be content in whatsoever state or country we were in. The house being built in 2008

After 6 months, an affordable house came up for sale.  Therefore, we gave up the “dream” and plans of building our own house.  The plot of land that we had our eyes on, had also been taken by someone else.  We were new to the field and had much work to do, and needed to get settled and move on to the work that God had called us.  Therefore, we moved out of that one-room apartment and bought a small house which became our home for the next 2 ½ years.  It was a nice house, but it had absolutely no view of the icebergs and bay.  It had a small bathroom, very small bedrooms and was connected to another house.  All of the houses in that neighborhood were government housing, except ours.  There were lots of parties in the area and our neighbor enjoyed playing the drums all hours of the night!  This was our first real home in Greenland and we loved every minute of living there!

After climbing the steps, follow the path to our door!
We spent the evening of July 4th carrying stones and rocks to make this path. It's much nicer than the muddy path  we had before.
In 2008 we noticed that someone was building on “our land,” we would often take walks by there to watch the progress. It wasn’t long before we noticed that the house being built was the exact house kit we had looked at from Canada. It felt so fitting that “our house” was being built on “our land” and from then on we would refer to it as “our house” J.  We got to see our “Dream” house being built right before our eyes!

In 2010, God provided a 2,000 square foot building for church.  We moved into this building and it became our new home for many years.  We lived in one part of the building and used the other part for church services and activities.  Over the next few years, we would drive by our “dream” house on the hill.  One day we noticed that it was for sale on-line.  We didn’t think anything of it, except we did enjoy looking at the pictures of the inside.

The Living Room with a View
Last year, as our ministry began to grow, we started praying about what to do.  We knew our ministry could grow if we had more space, so we first started looking for other places for holding services.  Then it was like the LORD said, why don’t you move out of the church building?!  This had been our home now for over 5 years, the longest we had ever lived in one place!  At first, no one wanted to even think of moving!  We loved our home and hated the thought of leaving it.  However, we knew the set-up of the building was perfect for a church kitchen and fellowship hall as well as extra Sunday school rooms.  This would also give us the opportunity to knock down some walls to enlarge the sanctuary from 350 square feet to almost double.

The Kitchen. We love the open floor plan!
We went online and began to look for houses for sale.  Guess what house was still on the market?!?!  Yes, our little dream house on the hill!  We set up an appointment and finally got to see the inside of it.  It had closets…it’s actually one of the only houses in town with closets.  It had 2 full bathrooms!  The master bedroom had a small walk-in closet and its own private bath with a bathtub.  Our first house in Greenland with a bathtub!!!  We immediately fell in love with it!  A small, but perfectly set up house with a view overlooking the Bay with all its icebergs!  Another thing that we always prayed for was a yard for the children to have a safe place to play.  Now they have a mountain as their backyard!  Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

The Dining Area
There is so much more to the story, but for sake of time, I will simply say, God gave us our Dream House!  Today is exactly one year since we moved into this house.  Not a day has gone by, where we haven’t thanked God for this peaceful little home He has provided for us.  It still doesn’t seem real!  Our home has become our haven.  We spend a lot of time at the church still, dealing with people and ministry responsibilities.  At the end of the day, it is nice to have a separate place to come home to!

Our House
Once again God has proven that He can do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think!
